<p><a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/programs/#eggcelerator-lab">The (Egg)celerator Lab</a> (formerly the Accelerator Lab) is focused on identifying and supporting nonfiction directors working on their first or second feature-length documentary. This program brings together ten projects, with a special focus on self-identifying women and gender nonconforming directors.</p>
<p>In this year-long intensive mentorship program, these ten projects receive:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>$35,000 in grant funding</strong> for the production of their feature-length film;</li>
<li><strong>monthly mentorship</strong> with members of Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures&#8217; senior creative team;</li>
<li><strong>three creative retreats</strong> focused on career sustainability and creative development;</li>
<li><strong>industry and funder connections</strong>; and</li>
<li><strong>peer support</strong> from the (Egg)celerator Lab cohort.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>The deadline to apply for the 2020 (Egg)celerator Lab is June 25, 2019 at 3:00 pm EDT.</strong></p>
<p><span class="e2ma-style">Films from previous (Egg)celerator Labs have gone on to </span><span class="e2ma-style">major international film festivals and TV broadcast debuts, where they have won numerous awards and critical praise; </span><span class="e2ma-style">they have </span><span class="e2ma-style">taken creative risks; </span><span class="e2ma-style">helped foster important conversations about the issues they address; while </span><span class="e2ma-style">the first- and second-time directors behind them have grown as leaders, enhanced their creative practices, and worked toward building a</span> sustainable career in the film industry. <span class="e2ma-style"> </span></p>

<p><span class="e2ma-style">From the <b>2016 (Egg)elerator Lab:</b> <i><a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/grantee/tre-maison-dasan/" data-type="url">Tre Maison Dasan</a></i>, directed by Denali Tiller, is a story that explores parental incarceration through the eyes of three boys—Tre, Maison, and Dasan. Following their interweaving trajectories through boyhood marked by the criminal justice system, and told directly through the child’s perspective, the film unveils the challenges of growing up and what it means to become a man in America.</span></p>
<p><span class="e2ma-style"><i>Tre Maison Dasan </i>premiered at SFFILM in 2018; <a href="http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/films/tre-maison-dasan/?utm_source=promourl&amp;utm_medium=direct&amp;utm_campaign=tremaisondasan_2019" data-name="had its broadcast premiere on Independent Lens PBS" data-type="url">had its broadcast premiere on Independent Lens PBS</a> last April</span>, where it also was available for streaming; and the film&#8217;s <a href="https://www.tremaisondasan.com/impact" data-name="impact campaign and engagement strategy" data-type="url">impact campaign and engagement strategy #NationalVisitingDays</a> worked to &#8220;strengthen bonds of family, and prompt a national reflection about the the rippling effects of mass incarceration in America.&#8221;</p>

<p><span class="e2ma-style">From the <b>2017 (Egg)celerator Lab:</b> <i><a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/grantee/one-child-nation/" data-type="url">One Child Nation</a></i>, co-directed by Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang, follows </span><span class="e2ma-style">a filmmaker as she uncovers the untold history of China&#8217;s one-child policy and the generations of parents and children forever shaped by this social experiment.</span></p>
<p><span class="e2ma-style"><i>One Child Nation </i>premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary and <a href="https://variety.com/2019/film/markets-festivals/sundance-amazon-china-one-child-nation-1203126866/" data-name="was acquired by Amazon for global rights" data-type="url">was acquired by Amazon for global rights</a>.</span></p>

<p class="e2ma-p-div"><span class="e2ma-style">From the <b>2018 (Egg)celerator Lab:</b><i> <a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/grantee/always-in-season/" data-name="Always in Season" data-type="url">Always in Season</a></i>, directed by Jacqueline Olive, follows </span><span class="e2ma-style">the mother of Lennon Lacy, a 17-year-old who was found hanging from a swing set in rural North Carolina in 2014, as her search for justice and reconciliation begins and the trauma of more than a century of lynching African Americans bleeds into the present.</span></p>
<p class="e2ma-p-div"><span class="e2ma-style"><i>Always in Season</i> premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Award for Moral Urgency; Indie Grits, where it received Top Grit; RiverRun International Film Festival, where it received the Human Rights Award; as well as others. <a href="https://filmmakermagazine.com/106856-sundance-notebook-sexuality-on-screen-herzog-in-the-snow-and-americas-shameful-past-and-present/?fbclid=IwAR0vfpQrjvJg8Jh6Cfu_GNTh8ai3NMifw8WfGDuIbU9wWS5gGe_jRNWZwuY#.XNsicNNKjBL" data-name="Filmmaker Magazine" data-type="url">Filmmaker Magazine</a> called the film &#8220;haunting, difficult and necessary, a depiction of an America that we think of as relegated to the past but that continues to encroach on the present.&#8221; </span></p>

<p class="e2ma-p-div"><span class="e2ma-style">From the <b>2019 (Egg)celerator Lab:</b> <i><a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/grantee/silent-beauty/" data-type="url">Silent Beauty</a></i>, directed by Jasmin López, is a personal documentary that follows the director as she works to heal from child sexual abuse she endured at the hands of her grandfather, Gilberto, a Baptist minister, almost thirty years ago. In the process of sharing her own trauma with her large family, she learns that generations of children in her family were victims of the same abuse. </span></p>
<p class="e2ma-p-div"><span class="e2ma-style"><i>Silent Beauty </i>is currently in production. During the 2019 (Egg)celerator Lab program year, Jasmin is also one of four recipients of the <a href="https://www.cpb.org/pressroom/black-public-media-awards-jacquie-jones-memorial-scholarships-made-possible-cpb" data-name="Jacqui Jones Memorial Scholarship" data-type="url">Jacqui Jones Memorial Scholarship</a> by Black Public Media, and she recently participated in <a href="https://www.tfiny.org/programs/detail/tfi_network" data-name="Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) Networks" data-type="url">Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) Networks</a>, where the project received a grant from TFI and DocsMX. </span></p>

<p>To make ends meet, Americans are working longer hours across multiple jobs. This modern reality of nonstop work has resulted in an unexpected phenomenon: the flourishing of 24-hour daycare centers. <em>Through the Night</em> is a verité documentary that explores the personal cost of our modern economy through the stories of two working mothers and a child care provider, whose lives intersect at a 24-hour daycare center in New Rochelle, NY.</p>
<p><em>Through the Night </em>is a 2018 Accelerator Lab-supported film and is currently in production.</p>

<p>In the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where director Assia Boundaoui grew up, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences, Assia uncovers hundreds of pages of declassified FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11—code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access, <em>The Feeling of Being Watched</em> weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened to her neighborhood in the 90’s and probes why her community feels like they’re still being watched today. In the process, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. <em>The Feeling of Being Watched</em> follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.</p>
<p><em>The Feeling of Being Watched</em> recently premiered at the 2018 TriBeca Film Festival and is also being featured at Hot Docs.</p>

<p>Muhi, a cherubic Palestinian toddler with a life-threatening immune disorder, was transported to an Israeli hospital as a baby for emergency treatment. He and his devoted grandfather have lived there ever since, stuck in a bizarre no man’s land, with their extended family living on the other side of a fiercely guarded checkpoint. Their unique and moving story takes place within the crucible of the current relentless Israeli-Palestinian conflict that impacts everyone in its orbit.</p>
<p><em>Muhi &#8211; Generally Temporary</em> premiered at the 2017 San Francisco International Film Festival and was featured in<em> </em>the Human Rights Watch Film Festival of the same year.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/programs/#accelerator-lab">Accelerator Lab</a> is focused on identifying and supporting women nonfiction directors working on their first or second feature-length documentary. Each project receives a $35,000 grant in three parts for the production of a film, to be developed over the course of the 12-month program. All directors of the ten projects come together at various points over the course of a year for an intensive period of professional development, tailored mentorship and workshops with industry experts, creatively fusing the art and craft of filmmaking with best practices and peer-to-peer support.</p>

This is her attempt to understand what happened.</p>

<p>In the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where director Assia Boundaoui grew up, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences, Assia uncovers hundreds of pages of declassified FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11—code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access, <em>The Feeling of Being Watched</em> weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened to her neighborhood in the 90’s and probes why her community feels like they’re still being watched today. In the process, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. <em>The Feeling of Being Watched</em> follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.</p>

<p class="p1">Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures proudly announces receipt of the prestigious FilmCraft grant from the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in support of the<a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/programs/#accelerator-lab"> Accelerator Lab </a>for first- and second-time filmmakers. Grants range from $5,000-$15,000, and a total of $500,000 was awarded to 51 organizations for the 2018-2019 grants year.</p>
<p class="p1">“It is the Grants’ privilege and responsibility to fund organizations, rising and established, that reflect both The Academy’s values and its leadership role in the arts,” said Buffy Shutt, chair of the Academy’s grants committee. Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures’ FilmCraft grant will help fund the Accelerator Lab program and go towards fulfilling the organization’s mission to support women nonfiction filmmakers whose artful and innovative storytelling catalyzes social change. The Accelerator Lab, with a special focus on underrepresented voices and timely, urgent stories, identifies and supports emerging women filmmakers in the completion of their first or second feature-length nonfiction film. The year-long program comes with a $35,000 grant, monthly mentorship with Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures’ senior creative team, and three multi-day creative retreats held throughout the year. The 2019 Accelerator Lab Open Call will begin on Thursday, May 3, 2018.</p>
<p class="p1">Through their partnership, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures seek to strengthen the power of diverse women storytellers so that in turn they can change how we see, respond to, and shape the world around us.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition to a $5,000 grant and a seven-month mentorship program, the Fellows will come together in upstate New York for a multiday storytelling retreat aimed to help develop and strengthen their film’s narratives. “This year we’ll be doing a deep dive into storytelling,” says Lucila Moctezuma, Director of Programs at Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures. “The five-day retreat will allow our Diversity Fellows to have complete focus on their art and provide them with the space to learn from one another’s diverse perspectives and artistic practices. We are so thrilled to be working with these exceptional group of women filmmakers who have such important stories to tell and such special ways of telling them.”  </span></p>

<p><a href="https://chickeneggpics.org/grantee/prince-outer-space-zeki-muren/"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">A Prince From Outer Space: Zeki Müren</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, directed by Beyza Boyacioglu</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This experimental, multilayered film uses Zeki Müren, Turkey’s most celebrated singer and modern day queer icon, as a prism to explore the country’s internal contradictions, from its founding as a modern, secular nation to the current crisis. Zeki, “Turkey’s Liberace,” was a chameleon-like figure. He expertly used his celebrity to navigate society</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">allowing audiences to see in him only what they wanted to see. The film deconstructs how myths are made and consumed, as it provides a window onto Turkey, a nation existing between the worlds of the east and of the west while belonging to neither.</span></p>
<p><b>Beyza Boyacioglu</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a filmmaker and artist from Istanbul, currently based in New York. Her work has been exhibited in MoMA Documentary Fortnight, IDFA, RIDM, Anthology Film Archives, Morelia International Film Festival, Brooklyn Museum, Maysles Cinema, and !f Istanbul, among others. She was a part of MIT Open Documentary Lab between 2014–2017. She’s been a fellow at UnionDocs, Flaherty Seminar, and Greenhouse. She holds an MASc in Comparative Media Studies from MIT and an MFA in Computer Art from SVA.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the intersection of the northern Mexico desert and the plains of southwest Texas exists a symbiotic community. Here, people’s lives are spread across two countries, connected by a bridge that everyone must travel. For some, crossing to the other side means getting to work or school. For others, life straddling the border is the only way to keep their family together. Through a collection of interweaving vignettes, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The In Between</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a poetic ode to a greater reality of the border than the one portrayed on the news, offering a nuanced and intimate portrait of a place and its people at the heart of Mexican-American identity.</span></p>
<p><b>Robie Flores </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">grew up on the US/Mexico border. She is an independent filmmaker and video editor based in New York City. She previously worked with Loki Films as an assistant on </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Detropia</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Education of Mohammed Hussein,</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and ESPN’s Nine for IX documentary, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Branded</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Her work has appeared on CNN and Bloomberg and has been featured by Teen Vogue, Fusion, Allure, and i-D Vice. The</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> In Between</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is her first feature film. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A look at the complexities of a South Bronx housing project over the course of a summer.</span></p>
<p><b>Nadia Hallgren </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">is an award-winning filmmaker and director of photography from The Bronx, New York. With a focus on vérité storytelling, her cinematography credits include the Sundance award-winner </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Motherland</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (2017), Academy Award-nominated and Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Trouble the Water</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (2008), and Sundance award-winner </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Trapped</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (2016). She has directed short films and series for Field of Vision, Topic, and PBS; and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a 2018 Concordia Studio Artist in Residence, and an alum of International Center of Photography. Most recently, Nadia won the special jury prize at SXSW 2018 for an independent episodic series she directed about women running for office in response to Trump being elected. </span></p>

<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Commuted</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> tells the story of Danielle Metz, a 52-year-old woman trying to find her footing after spending nearly half of her life in prison. In 2016 Danielle’s was one of 568 life sentences President Obama overturned. Her life story is just one example of how the US criminal justice system impacts black families—before she was incarcerated, she had lost one boyfriend to police violence, another to a wrongful conviction, and then found herself in prison due to involvement with her husband’s drug ring. As Danielle starts to right her path, we reflect with her on a life interrupted.</span></p>
<p><b>Nailah Jefferson</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">’s first film, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Vanishing Pearls</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, told the story of a little known African American oyster fishing community and their fight for justice after the BP oil spill. After acquisition by ARRAY/AFFRM, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Vanishing Pearls</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> streams on The Urban Movie Channel. Nailah was nominated for a 2017 National Magazine Ellie award for Essence Magazine’s </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Black Girl Magic Episode 4</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Nailah’s first narrative, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Plaquemines</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, was chosen as an American Black Film Festival HBO Shorts finalist and is available on HBO, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This story happens in rural coastal Kenya. When Karisa, a young artist living in the coastal city of Mombasa, reads a Facebook post accusing his Grandma of being a witch, he decides to return to his rural home to confront the accusations against her. The accusers, Karisa&#8217;s uncles, demand that Grandma repent and be exorcised in a Pentecostal ceremony. The story evolves into a family confrontation between those trying to protect Grandma and those condemning her. At the end, love and care triumph against superstition and economic interest.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In today&#8217;s post-colonial Kenya, the disturbing trend of witchcraft accusations, often resulting in the murder of an elder, is being used to cover up hundreds of family disputes over land, inheritance, and money. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Letter</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a story through the lens of a single family highlighting the universal issues of elderly abuse and greed.</span></p>
<p><b>Maia von Lekow </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">is a Kenyan musician and filmmaker. Fusing her music with a healthy fascination of people and culture, Maia has worked as director, producer, and sound recordist on several music videos and corporate films. She was named a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR on World Refugee Day 2013, and has received an African Movie Academy Award for her song &#8220;Uko Wapi.&#8221; A performing artist in her own right, Maia has appeared on several Kenyan broadcasts and maintains strong links with producers and presenters in the region.</span></p>
<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Letter</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is Maia’s first feature documentary. Maia will compose original music for the film.</span></p>
<p><b>Chris King</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is an award-winning filmmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya. Born in Australia, Chris studied at The School of Creative Arts at the University of Melbourne with honors in Visual Media. Chris has lived in Kenya full-time since 2007, working as a cinematographer, editor, animator, director, and producer in both factual and non-factual shorts, features, and music videos. In 2009, Chris co-founded Circle and Square Productions with his wife Maia and, in the same year, received an African Movie Academy Award in Editing for his work on the Kenyan feature film, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">From a Whisper</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>

<p>The Accelerator Lab is focused on identifying and supporting women non-fiction directors who are first and second-time filmmakers. This program brings together ten projects helmed by first or second-time directors, with a special focus on underrepresented voices.</p>
<p>Each participant will receive a two-part grant for the production of a film, to be developed over the course of a 12-month program. All ten participants will come together at various points over the course of a year for an intensive period of mentorship and workshops with industry experts, creatively fusing the art and craft of filmmaking with best practices and peer-to-peer support.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The deadline for the 2015 Accelerator Lab Open Call is fast approaching. <strong>Applications are due this Wednesday, June 10, 2015, by 5:00 PM EDT. </strong></p>
<p>If you’re only just getting started on your application, don’t worry &#8211; we’ve compiled the below tips to help you get up to speed fast:</p>
<p><b>Overview: </b>For those of you that want a full breakdown of this whole process, please review our Grants page and Frequently Asked Questions, both of which provide very helpful and thorough information. If you still have questions, please email info@chickeneggpics.org with your project title in the subject line.</p>
<p><b>Funding and mentorship: </b>This Open Call for funding is the process that determines which films will be selected for our 2015 Accelerator Lab. If you are selected to receive a grant, you will also participate in the lab, which is a year long intensive mentorship program (with possibility for extension). It is not a goal of the lab for the films to be completed in that year; that is the length of time you’ll spend with us receiving mentorship. The lab will be structured around 3 to 4 retreats that the granted directors are required to attend, with travel support from us. The lab will be more intensive and tailored than our past mentorship programs, but if you want some insight on our mentorship style in general, take a look at our <a href="http://chickeneggpics.org/mentorship/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mentorship page</a> or our <a href="http://chickeneggpics.org/blog/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blog</a>.</p>
<p><b>First- or second- time filmmakers: </b>When we say first- or second- time filmmaker, we’re talking specifically about your experience as a director or co-director of feature-length documentaries. You are still eligible if you’ve already made a few shorts, or done fiction work, we’re looking for directors who are making their first or second feature-length documentary. By feature length, we mean 40 minutes or more. Read more about this in our <a href="http://chickeneggpics.org/grants/#faq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frequently Asked Questions</a>.</p>
<p><b>Early production:</b> For this round, we’re only accepting projects between development and early-production (with no more than 40% of the footage shot) because we want to ensure that we have the greatest opportunity possible to make an impact on the film and on your development as the director. If you’re having trouble figuring out what percentage you’ve shot, think about the big picture of your finished film, where you are now, and what you need to do to get to that finished project. What do you have in the can, and how much more shooting do you think you have left to do? That’s how you’ll assess if you’ve reached the 40%. We’re not keeping count, but we hope you’ll respect the guidelines and be honest with yourself when considering applying.</p>
<p><b>Work samples: </b>In a nutshell, the short work sample should grab our attention and show the project’s potential; the long work sample should give us a deeper sense of your directorial style, characters, and pacing of the film; and the prior work sample should tell us about your experience and your ability to follow through. The short and long samples should consist of pieces of the project with which you’re currently applying, whereas the prior work sample is from a different film you’ve worked on in the past.</p>
<p><b>No footage shot yet:</b> We have a strict requirement of at least 7 minutes of footage for applicants. If you can, shoot something quickly before the deadline or maybe ask your subjects to shoot some verite or interview of themselves for you, but only if you think it will be good enough to represent your project in our review process. We do not accept unsolicited updates, so the application is the only opportunity for you to show us what you have. If it doesn’t seem you can get it all together before the deadline, it might not be the right time for you to apply for this round.</p>

Since 2005, Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures has awarded almost $4 million in grants and 5,200 hours of mentorship to over 180 films. We are interested in films that tackle human rights, social justice, and environmental issues in a nuanced, original, and compelling way. We look for new voices, powerful stories, and filmmakers who are committed to working in tandem with social movements.</p>
<p>This year’s Open Call marks the launch of a new program: Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures’ Accelerator Lab for first and second-time filmmakers. To determine your eligibility to apply, please see our <a href="http://chickeneggpics.org/grants/#guidelines-and-criteria" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Guidelines &amp; Criteria</a>, as well as our <a href="http://chickeneggpics.org/grants/#faq" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frequently Asked Questions</a>. The Accelerator Lab is focused on identifying and supporting a diverse group of women nonfiction directors who are first and second-time filmmakers, with the aim of helping them break into the documentary film world, keep on track within the industry’s pipeline, build toward sustainable and successful careers, and tell the most powerful and impactful stories they can. These priorities apply to this 2015 Open Call only.</p>
<p>Applications will be accepted beginning <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_354970352"><span class="aQJ">Monday, May 11, 2015</span></span>. There is one deadline for the 2015 Open Call: <strong><span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_354970353"><span class="aQJ">Tuesday, June 10</span></span></strong><strong>, 2015, <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_354970354"><span class="aQJ">5:00 PM EDT</span></span>.</strong> The application fee is $35. <p>Grantees were chosen from over 640 applications, and include women filmmakers working in India, Egypt, Libya, China, and the United Kingdom, as well as across the United States.</p>
<p>In celebration of Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures&#8217; 10th anniversary in 2015, this most recent Open Call was designed to elevate women and girls behind and in front of the camera. This special Women &amp; Girls On-Screen initiative prioritized projects that featured women and girls on-screen as prominent characters and storytellers of their own lives and experiences.</p>

<p>New projects by past Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures grantees were awarded discretionary grants: <strong><em>Thank You for Playing</em></strong>, directed by Malika Zouhali-Worrall (<em>Call Me Kuchu)</em> and David Osit, and <strong><em>Out of Mind</em></strong>, directed by Kristi Jacobson (<em>A Place at the Table)</em> received funds for completion and production, respectively<em>.</em></p>
<p>Additionally, two films, <strong><em>B</em></strong><strong><em>ú</em></strong><strong><em>scame: Search for Me</em></strong>, directed by Nico Opper<em>, </em>and<em> <strong>(T)ERROR</strong></em>, directed by Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe<strong><em>,</em></strong> were awarded follow-up grants for critical post-production needs.</p>

In 2011, Amina Arraf, a beautiful lesbian revolutionary blogger in Syria, captured the heart of Sandra Bagaria. The fervent love affair that developed between them would sweep Sandra into an international intrigue involving American secret services, some of the biggest media outlets, and countless supporters of the Syrian revolution. This is the story of an unprecedented media fiasco that Sandra was forced to live through, and that we invite you to experience with her on a journey around the world.</p>
<p><strong><em>Canary in a Coal Mine</em></strong><br />
Directed by Jennifer Brea<br />
Jennifer, a Harvard PhD student, was signing a check at a restaurant when she found she could not write her own name. Months before her wedding, she became progressively more ill, losing the ability even to sit in a wheelchair. When doctors insisted that her condition was psychosomatic, she picked up her camera to document her own story and the stories of four other patients struggling with the world&#8217;s most prevalent orphaned disease.</p>
<p><strong><em>Care<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Deirdre Fishel<br />
The feature documentary <em>Care</em>, now in post-production, exposes the deep flaws in the U.S. eldercare system by following the intimate and dramatic stories of three overworked and underpaid home health aides and one family struggling to find and pay for quality care. The film sounds the alarm about an exploited workforce, an aging population, and an impending crisis of care.</p>
<p><strong><em>Councilwoman<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Margo Guernsey<br />
<em>Councilwoman</em> is about a Dominican hotel housekeeper who sits on the City Council in Providence, RI. The film follows her first term as she learns the ropes of political office, and is part of a spirited effort to win economic justice for hotel workers. She has two contenders in a tight race for her re-election. This is a story about civic participation and power in our democracy.</p>
<p><strong><em>#Dalitwomenfight<br />
</em></strong>Anonymous<br />
<em>#Dalitwomenfight</em> is a feature-length documentary that follows a courageous group of Dalit women who overcome unspeakable attacks and spearhead a bold national campaign to end caste and sexual violence in India. Their remarkable journey catapults them from their humble villages onto the center stage of Indian politics as they fight to heal not only themselves, but also the very soul of their country.</p>
<p><strong><em>Even When I Fall<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Sky Neal and Kate Mclarnon<br />
<em>Even When I Fall</em> is the story of three remarkable young Nepali women, all survivors of human trafficking into corrupt big top circuses across India. Facing forgotten families and uncertain futures, the story begins in the often-overlooked aftermath of a childhood spent in captivity and forced labor. But these tough young women were inadvertently left with a secret weapon by their captors – their breathtaking skills as circus artists.</p>
<p><strong><em>Freedom Fields<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Naziha Arebi<br />
In post-revolution Libya, a group of women are brought together by one dream: to play football for their country. <em>Freedom Fields</em> is a film about struggle and sacrifice. At the new dawn of a nation once cut off from the rest of the world, this is a story of following your dreams and aspirations against all odds and at any cost. Through their eyes, we see the reality of a country in transition, where personal stories collide with history.</p>
<p><strong><em>From This Day Forward<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Sharon Shattuck<br />
When filmmaker Sharon Shattuck’s dad came out as transgender and changed her name to Trisha, Sharon was in the awkward throes of middle school. Her father’s transition was difficult for her straight-identified mother to accept, but they decided not to divorce. Committed to staying together as a family, they began a balancing act that would prove even more challenging than expected. As the family reunites to plan Sharon’s wedding, she asks how her parent’s love survived against all odds.</p>
<p><strong><em>A Guangzhou Love Affair<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Kathy Huang<br />
In China, an unprecedented surge in African migration has led to a rise in marriages between Chinese women and African men. <em>A Guangzhou Love Affair </em>captures the love, heartache, and real life challenges of Afro-Chinese couples attempting to forge a meaningful future together in the face of racism and xenophobia.</p>
<p><strong><em>Hot Girls Wanted<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus<br />
<em>Hot Girls Wanted</em> is a first-ever look at the realities of the professional “amateur” porn world and the steady stream of 18-to-19-year old girls entering into it.</p>
<p><strong><em>The Movie About Anna<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Alex Sichel and Elizabeth Giamatti<br />
<em>The Movie About Anna</em> is a hybrid documentary that interweaves the real story of Alex Sichel, diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2011, with the fictional story of Anna Seashell (played by Lili Taylor), who manages to find the glass half-full when faced with the same diagnosis. The documentary follows Alex as she uses the film to explore what is foremost on her mind while confronting a terminal disease: parenting, marriage, faith, life, and death.</p>
<p><strong><em>PC594<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Libby Spears<br />
PC594 is the California penal code section that describes crimes against property —including painting beautiful images on dilapidated walls. LA street artist Lydia Emily engages in biodegradable, non-violent, political protest on government and corporate real estate. She’s conquered innumerable challenges, but now a crippling diagnosis threatens to change everything.</p>
<p><strong><em>The Trials of Spring<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Gini Reticker<br />
<em>The Trials of Spring </em>follows the journeys of three Egyptian women from the early days of the 2011 Arab Spring until today: Hend, from a rural military family and awaiting a harsh prison sentence for protesting against military rule; Mariam, an activist fighting to end sexual assault; and Mama Khadiga, a formerly veiled widow who became a caretaker of the revolutionaries. Their intersecting stories reveal the vital and underreported role women play in shaping the region’s future.</p>
<p><strong><em>The Vote<br />
</em></strong>Directed by Hanan Abdalla and Cressida Trew<br />
In the first elections after the fall of a dictator, three women candidates fight for a new Egypt, as millions go to vote for the first time in their lives. But as the media celebrates the birth of a new democracy, a more sinister power struggle is at play. Capturing an historic and bloody turning point in the struggle for the region, <em>The Vote</em> asks fundamental questions about democracy, betrayal, and what it means to truly manifest the will of the people.</p>

<em>Out of Mind</em> investigates an invisible part of the American justice system: the use of isolation and segregation in US prisons, commonly known as solitary confinement. With unprecedented access inside a prison tackling the issue head on, the film explores this divisive issue through the experiences of those on both sides of the bars.</p>
<p><strong><em>Thank You for Playing</em></strong><br />
Directed by Malika Zouhali-Worrall and David Osit<br />
Ryan Green’s four-year-old son Joel has terminal cancer. Ryan, an indie video game developer, is building an unusually poetic video game to document his experiences raising a dying child, and to honor Joel while he is still alive. <em>Thank You For Playing</em> follows the creation and growing success of Ryan’s game, as his son’s health continues to decline.</p>

16-year-old Juan Carlos has spent most of his life either stuck in a tumultuous home or as a runaway on the streets of Mexico City. When he decides to join Ipoderac, an organization that houses runaway boys, his life changes in the most unexpected ways. Juan Carlos is a study in resilience, reminding us that peace results from patience, determination, and the ability to forgive those who have harmed us.</p>
<p><strong><em>(T)ERROR</em></strong><em><br />
</em>Directed by Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe<br />
<strong>(</strong><em>T)ERROR</em><em> </em>is the first film to document, on camera, a covert counterterrorism sting as it unfolds. Through the perspective of *******, a 63-year-old Black revolutionary turned FBI informant, viewers are given an unprecedented glimpse of the government’s counterterrorism tactics and the murky justifications behind them.</p>
